Cataract

Our Colorado Center Offers Cataract Surgery Performed by an Expert Surgeon

If cataracts obstruct your vision, we can help you experience the beauty of Colorado again through cataract surgery. William Hines, M.D., has performed more than 6,000 cataract surgeries.

Cataracts are opacities (cloudiness) that form on or in the natural lens of your eye. As cataracts worsen, your vision will begin to deteriorate, especially in bright light for some types or in darker situations, such as driving at night. Cataracts are more common with aging, but can occur at any age and can occur in one or both eyes. The clouding of the lens may seem to happen suddenly or slowly over time.

Cataracts may be caused by many things:

  • Aging
  • Diabetes
  • Various eye diseases
  • Eye infections
  • Injuries
  • Surgery
  • Medication (such as steroids or high cholesterol medicines)
  • Genetics

Cataracts are not painful; however, you may notice some of these symptoms:

  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Glare when driving or reading
  • Colors seem dull
  • More light is required to read
  • Frequent changes in your lens prescription
  • Difficulty seeing details

Cataract surgery is the only way to remove a cataract and restore clear vision.  The doctors at Hines-Sight, experts in cataract surgery, will recommend cataract surgery when the cataracts begin to limit your activities.  The procedure is performed in the Colorado Outpatient Eye Surgery Center and takes approximately 15 - 20 minutes.

During cataract surgery, the natural lens of your eye is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens implant (IOL).  Consultation with the Doctors and Staff of Hines-Sight will help you decide which type of IOL to have implanted into your eye.

Cataract surgery is virtually painless and recovery is quick. Your eye may be patched when you leave the facility, but the patch will be removed the next day. You will notice improvement in your vision; however, you may still need glasses for some tasks. In a signiificant percent of cataract surgery patients, the capsule that holds the new intraocular lens becomes cloudy and blurs your vision similarly to the original cataract.  Thus, it is often called an after cataract.  This can happen anytime from months to years after the procedure.  If this occurs, a laser, called a YAG laser, is used to make a small opening in the cloudy capsule, restoring the clear vision.  This procedure takes just a few minutes in the office and will make your vision clear again.
