LASIK

Do you want freedom from glasses and contact lenses? Dr. Justin Coco at Hines Sight is a refractive surgery specialist who can make it happen. He offers LASIK starting at $1,995 per eye.

Our Denver, CO, practice has provided LASIK to more than 50,000 satisfied patients. Let's take a closer look at what LASIK can do for you.

How Does LASIK Surgery Work?

The cornea (the clear outer coating of your eye) helps redirect and focus light into the retinas, which then send the visual information to your brain. When the shape of your corneas prevents light from being focused correctly into the retina, it results in blurry or unfocused vision. We call this a refractive error.

LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery that uses a laser to reshape your corneas, correcting refractive errors and allowing light to focus properly onto the retinas. Eyewear can also improve your vision by focusing light toward your eyes, but LASIK offers a more permanent solution that can address the source of the problem.

What Happens During LASIK Surgery? Three Primary Steps

1.
The doctor will use a laser to create a tissue flap on the corneal surface (epithelium), which grants access to the center layer of the cornea (stroma).
2. The computer-guided excimer laser will precisely remove very small amounts of corneal tissue to achieve the proper shape.
3. Once treatment is complete, the flap will be carefully closed and left to heal on its own.

Consultation

Dr. Coco or Dr. Cushing will evaluate your medical history, current prescription, medications, treatment goals, and other factors to determine whether you are a candidate for LASIK. We typically recommend custom wavefront LASIK for patients who want truly optimal results.

Surgery

LASIK can be completed in about 15 minutes on-site by Dr. Coco. First, numbing eye drops, a lid speculum, and a suction device will be applied to the eye. After creating the corneal flap with a laser, Dr. Coco will make the necessary refinements using a second laser: the VISX Star S4.

Recovery

You should rest for the remainder of the day. Many patients notice clear vision as soon as they leave our office, with improvements continuing in the following days and weeks. Most patients can return to work the next day.

Post-Op Care

After your procedure, it is important that you closely follow the post-operative instructions provided by our doctors in Denver. These may include:

  • Refraining from strenuous activity until you are cleared by your doctor
  • Not rubbing your eyes
  • Avoiding hot tubs or water sports for at least one week after surgery
  • Not wearing eye makeup for at least a week

Your surgeon may also prescribe antibiotic eyedrops to reduce the risk of infection. It is normal to experience dry eyes for about six months after treatment, along with a temporary difficulty seeing at night.

Dry Eyes: A Common Temporary Side Effect

Up to 70% of LASIK patients are reported to experience some degree of dry eyes after LASIK surgery. It usually lasts about three to six months, but could potentially continue for years. You may be more prone to dry eyes after LASIK if you are female or have suffered from the condition before undergoing LASIK.

If you find yourself experiencing symptoms such as irritated eyes or increased light sensitivity after LASIK surgery, we can provide several sophisticated treatments. Our goal is to help you achieve the best possible ocular health, and we are prepared to make your transition into life after LASIK as comfortable and beneficial as possible.

Enhanced Results With Custom Wavefront LASIK Available at Our Denver Practice

Custom LASIK is an enhanced type of LASIK eye surgery that treats all aspects of the visual spectrum, including higher-order aberrations (such as glare and halos) as well as lower-order aberrations (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism). Traditional LASIK does not treat higher-order aberrations. During the custom procedure, precise technology is used to create a detailed map of your corneal surface. Based on this information, the computer-guided laser makes changes to the corneal tissue that provide enhanced focus with minimal glare, halos, or compromises in night vision.

The difference between traditional LASIK surgery and custom LASIK surgery can be compared to buying a suit. Traditional LASIK is like buying a great-looking suit off the rack. Custom LASIK is like buying a custom-tailored suit that fits perfectly and accounts for your specific body type. During your consultation, we can help determine which approach is best for your needs.

iDesign  Is the Key to Wavefront LASIK

As a custom LASIK patient of Hines Sight, your surgeon will use iDesign®, a refractive studio that integrates five simultaneous measurements:

  • 1. Full-gradient topography

  • 2. Wavefront aberrometry

  • 3. Autorefraction

  • 4. Keratometry

  • 5. Pupillometry

Precise collection of this data provides the surgeon with the information he needs to create a personalized treatment plan. Once these measurements have been taken, your surgeon can use the excimer laser to provide refinements that minimize glare, halos, and starbursts at night, giving you the best vision possible.

Hines Sight is proud to adopt the latest technology in order to provide our patients with life-changing outcomes. No matter what type of refractive surgery we provide, you can expect that every measure is being taken in order to ensure your safety and satisfaction.

How Much Does LASIK Cost?

At our Denver practice, the cost of LASIK (in situ keratomileusis) starts at $1,995 per eye. Basic insurance plans do not cover LASIK because it is considered an elective procedure. To help make LASIK a fit for your budget, Hines Sight accepts financing through CareCredit® and GreenSky®. These flexible payment plans allow patients to break the total cost of their care into manageable monthly payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions that our Colorado patients ask us regarding LASIK:

Does getting LASIK surgery hurt?

With modern advances in technology and local anesthesia, laser vision correction is a virtually painless experience for most patients. We will provide numbing eye drops, and you should only feel some mild pressure on the eye during certain steps of the surgery. Your vision may also temporarily blur or go dim during some stages, which is a normal part of the procedure.

How many years does LASIK last?

Every patient is different, so we cannot give a timeframe for how many years the results will last. The results of LASIK are permanent, but your vision may still change over time. Laser vision correction cannot prevent presbyopia, the loss of vision that occurs naturally with age. Other eye conditions and complications can also affect your vision after receiving LASIK, which is why patients should maintain their health and schedule regular eye checkups.

How can I prepare for LASIK surgery?

Before undergoing laser vision correction, patients should stop wearing contact lenses several weeks before the initial evaluation. On the day before the refractive surgery, patients should also stop wearing any makeup, cream, lotions, or perfumes until the surgeon instructs them it is safe to use those products again.
