Cornea

The cornea is often described as the “window” of the eye, a clear tissue that helps focus light onto your retina. Your cornea is one of the most essential components of your eye for good vision. A healthy cornea is very important the health of your entire eye and to the quality of your vision.  The cornea lacks blood vessels and needs to be completely clear for good vision. This leaves your cornea susceptible to many diseases and conditions.

A healthy cornea looks completely clear, it is actually made up of three different layers - a surface epithelial layer (about 9% of the thickness of the entire cornea), a middle stromal layer (about 90% of the thickness of the entire cornea), and an inner endothelial layer (about 1% of the entire thickness of the cornea).

There are many issues that our patients run into when it comes to corneal health. At Hines Sight, we are experienced and able to diagnose and treat many corneal diseases, such as keratoconus, conjunctivitis and dry eye. We are even able to give corneal transplants in severe cases of corneal injury or disease.
